Plastik ist überall. Es durchdringt die Gegenwart, ist billig, nahezu weltweit verfügbar und im Alltag omnipräsent. Und auch in die Kunst fanden Kunststoffe aufgrund ihrer immensen gestalterischen Möglichkeiten früh Einzug und wurden schnell zu einem zentralen Material. In den 1950er-Jahren wurden synthetische Stoffe zum Symptom und Symbol der Massenkultur – das „Plastic Age“ war geboren. In der kurzen Geschichte dieser bis heute dominanten Materialkultur wandelte sich der erfolgreiche vielseitige Werkstoff vom Inbegriff für Fortschritt, Modernität, utopischen Geist und Demokratisierung des Konsums zu einer Bedrohung der Umwelt.
Die SCHIRN widmet der spannenden Geschichte der Kunststoffe in der bildenden Kunst eine große Themenausstellung. PLASTIC WORLD präsentiert Objekte, Assemblagen, Installationen, Filme und Dokumentationen und eröffnet ein breites Panorama der künstlerischen Verwendung und Bewertung von Plastik, die den jeweiligen gesellschaftlichen Kontext spiegeln. Das Spektrum reicht von der Euphorie der Popkultur in den 1960er-Jahren über den futuristischen Einfluss des Space Age und die Trash-Arbeiten des Nouveau Réalisme bis zu ökokritischen Positionen der jüngsten Zeit; es umfasst Architekturutopien und Environments ebenso wie Experimente mit Materialeigenschaften.
Zu sehen sind über 100 Werke von rund 50 internationalen Künstler*innen, darunter Monira Al Qadiri, Archigram, Arman, César, Christo, Haus-Rucker-Co, Eva Hesse, Hans Hollein, Craig Kauffman, Kiki Kogelnik, Gino Marotta, James Rosenquist, Pascale Marthine Tayou und Pınar Yoldaş.

THE SCHIRN DEVOTES A MAJOR EXHIBITION TO THE EXCITING HISTORY OF PLASTICS IN FINE ARTS

Plastic is everywhere. It permeates the present, is cheap, available almost worldwide and omnipresent in everyday life. Plastics also found their way into art early on due to their immense design possibilities and quickly became a central material. In the 1950s, synthetic materials became a symptom and symbol of mass culture - the “Plastic Age” was born. In the short history of this material culture, which is still dominant today, the successful, versatile material transformed from the epitome of progress, modernity, utopian spirit and democratization of consumption to a threat to the environment.
The SCHIRN is dedicating a large themed exhibition to the exciting history of plastics in the visual arts. PLASTIC WORLD presents objects, assemblages, installations, films and documentaries and opens up a broad panorama of the artistic use and evaluation of plastic that reflects the respective social context. The spectrum ranges from the euphoria of pop culture in the 1960s to the futuristic influence of the Space Age and the trash works of the Nouveau Réalisme to recent eco-critical positions; it includes architectural utopias and environments as well as experiments with material properties.
